Crowns Prosthodontics, Palarivattom
A tooth with a large filling, a crack or a root canal can look fine and still be one hard bite away from splitting. A dental crown, often called a cap, covers the whole tooth and holds it together, so you can chew on it normally again.
At 32 Sparkles Dental Clinic in Palarivattom, Kochi, crowns are planned by our MDS prosthodontist, Dr Krishnapriya, using digital intraoral scans where suitable. Clinical protocols are overseen by our founder, Dr Nikita Menon, a dentist with 19+ years of clinical experience.
Broken a tooth or lost a crown? We keep same-day emergency slots. Call or WhatsApp first and keep any broken piece.

01 Background
A tooth needs a crown when it has lost so much structure that what is left could split under normal chewing. The usual causes are a large filling that has failed, a crack, a tooth treated with root canal, or heavy wear from grinding. In each case the crown holds the remaining tooth together.
Back teeth are most at risk. A molar with a large old filling has thin walls of natural tooth around it, and every time you bite those walls flex. Over years this can open a hairline crack. Early cracks often show up as a sharp pain when you bite on something hard, or as sensitivity to cold that comes and goes. A chipped or broken tooth is the later stage.
Teeth treated with root canal treatment are a special case. Removing the pulp leaves the tooth hollow and often weaker, so most back teeth need a crown afterwards to stop them splitting. Front teeth with little damage can often be finished with a filling instead.
02 Overview
A dental crown is a cap that covers the whole visible part of a tooth, from the biting surface down to the gum line. A filling replaces only the part of the tooth that was lost to decay. Once more than about half of a tooth is gone, or the tooth has cracked, a filling can no longer hold it together and a crown is the safer choice.
To fit a crown, the dentist trims a thin layer from every side of the tooth so the cap can sit over it without making the tooth bulky. The crown is then cemented in place and becomes the new outer surface you chew on. Your own root, the nerve or root filling inside, and the bone around the tooth all stay as they are.
A crown is also different from a veneer, which is a thin shell bonded only to the front of a tooth to change its colour or shape. Veneers suit healthy front teeth. Crowns suit teeth that are weak, heavily filled or cracked, and back teeth that take a lot of chewing force. For a small chip, dental bonding may be enough and removes no tooth at all.
If a filling on the same tooth has broken more than once, ask whether a crown would last longer than another repair.
03 Candidacy
Dental crowns suit a tooth that is weakened but still has healthy roots and enough tooth above the gum to hold a cap. Typical cases are a large or failing filling, a cracked tooth, a back tooth after root canal treatment, and a worn or badly shaped tooth. A crown does not suit a tooth that is loose or has a split root.
Not sure whether your tooth needs a crown or a filling? An examination with an X-ray answers that.

At 32 Sparkles Dental Clinic, crowns are made in four main materials. The choice depends on where the tooth is, how hard you bite, and how much the colour matters to you.
A metal inner shell with tooth-coloured porcelain on the outside. A long-used choice for back teeth.
A strong, fully tooth-coloured ceramic with no metal. Good for back teeth and for people who grind.
A glass ceramic that lets light through like natural enamel. Chosen for front teeth where appearance matters most.
All-metal crowns, from ₹3,000 to ₹6,000, are still offered for a back tooth that is not visible when you smile and where cost matters most. If the tooth is missing rather than damaged, the crown sits on a single tooth implant instead. See our dental implants page for how that works.
We show you the shade guide and talk through each material before you choose.

A dental crown at 32 Sparkles Dental Clinic in Palarivattom usually takes two visits about a week apart. The first visit prepares the tooth and records its shape. The second visit fits the finished crown. Each visit takes 45 to 90 minutes under local anaesthesia.
We check the tooth, the gum around it and the bite, and take a digital X-ray to see the roots and any old decay. If the nerve is inflamed, our endodontists treat that first. You get the plan and an estimate before any work starts.
The tooth is numbed and old filling and decay are removed. The dentist then trims a thin, even layer from each side so the crown will fit without looking bulky. If very little tooth is left, a post and core is built up first.
We take a digital intraoral scan of the prepared tooth and the teeth around it, or a putty impression where a scan is not suitable. The shade is matched in daylight against the neighbouring teeth.
A temporary crown protects the tooth while the lab makes the final one. It is held with soft cement so it can be removed easily at the next visit.
The temporary is removed, the new crown is tried in, and its fit, bite and colour are checked before it is cemented. Your bite is adjusted until the crown meets the opposite teeth evenly.
Bite down on the articulating paper honestly at the fitting visit; a crown that feels slightly high on day one often causes soreness a week later.
06 Cost
In Kochi, a single dental crown generally costs between ₹3,000 and ₹30,000 per tooth, depending mainly on the material. Metal and PFM crowns sit at the lower end, zirconia in the middle to upper range, and E-max at the top. These are indicative market ranges collected from Kochi clinics and published price guides, not a quotation from 32 Sparkles Dental Clinic.
| Metal | ₹3,000 to ₹6,000 |
|---|---|
| Porcelain fused to metal | ₹3,500 to ₹10,000 |
| Zirconia | ₹6,000 to ₹30,000 |
| E-max (all ceramic) | From about ₹13,000 |
| Root canal treatment | ₹3,000 to ₹12,000 |
|---|---|
| Post and core build-up | Quoted after X-ray |
| Temporary crown | Usually included |
| Crown on an implant | Quoted with the implant |
Zirconia or E-max instead of PFM, a premium zirconia brand, a post and core, root canal treatment first, a front tooth that needs custom shade work, and several crowns made together for a matched smile.
A metal or PFM crown on a back tooth that does not show, enough natural tooth left that no post is needed, and treating a cracked tooth before it splits and needs extraction.
Your final cost depends on several factors, including the tooth, how much of it is left, any treatment needed first and the material chosen. An in-person evaluation with an X-ray is required before we can give you an estimate.
Ask at the front desk whether staged payments or EMI are available for your plan. The crown is usually paid in two parts: when the tooth is prepared and when the final crown is fitted.
Get the root canal, the post and the crown priced together on one estimate, so the total is clear before the first visit.
We explain the diagnosis, the material options and the cost before treatment starts.

Caring for a dental crown is much like caring for a natural tooth. Expect mild sensitivity for a few days, avoid sticky food on a temporary crown, and brush and clean between teeth daily so the edge where the crown meets the tooth stays free of decay.
Wait for the numbness to wear off before eating. Some sensitivity to cold is normal and usually fades within a few days.
With a temporary crown, avoid chewing gum and sticky sweets on that side. Call us if the temporary comes off, so we can refit it the same day.
If the final crown feels high or the tooth aches when you bite, come back for a quick bite adjustment. Do not wait for it to settle.
Floss or use an interdental brush daily and keep six-monthly check-ups with your general dentist. If you grind at night, a night guard protects the crown.
09 Your visit
A first visit for a crown at 32 Sparkles in Palarivattom takes about 30 to 45 minutes. It covers a short medical history, an examination, an X-ray and a clear explanation of the options and costs. Treatment can start the same day if you are ready.
At the front desk, tell us about any medicines, blood thinners, diabetes or pregnancy. The dentist shows you the X-ray on screen, points out the cracks or old fillings, and explains why a crown is or is not needed. If you are deciding between materials, we show you samples and the shade guide.
When the tooth is being prepared, you feel vibration and pressure but not sharp pain. The visit is broken into short steps so you can rest your jaw. You leave with a temporary crown and a date for the fitting.
10 Honest limits
A crown is not the right choice when the tooth underneath cannot be saved or would not stay stable. That includes a crack running into the root, a tooth loosened by gum disease, and a tooth with so little left above the gum that a crown would not stay on. In these cases we explain the alternatives first.
Crowns themselves last well. A systematic review of single crowns found about 95 out of 100 metal-ceramic crowns still in place after five years, with lithium disilicate glass-ceramic crowns at about 97 and zirconia crowns at about 92. The most common problems were chipped porcelain and decay at the edge of the crown.
We advise against a crown and discuss other options when:
Before agreeing to crown a healthy-looking tooth, ask to see the crack or the filling size on the X-ray yourself.

15 Visiting Kochi
Crowns fit well into a short trip home, because most single crowns need two visits about a week apart. Send us a recent X-ray and your travel dates on WhatsApp before you fly, and we will tell you whether the tooth looks suitable and how to schedule the visits within your stay.
If you have more than one tooth to crown, we can prepare them in the same week. If a root canal is needed first, allow a few extra days.
16 FAQ
A systematic review found about 95 out of 100 metal-ceramic crowns were still in place after five years, with similar figures for most ceramic crowns. Many crowns last much longer. Cleaning between your teeth, regular check-ups and a night guard if you grind make the biggest difference.
The tooth is numbed before it is shaped, so most patients feel pressure and vibration rather than pain. Some sensitivity to cold for a few days afterwards is common. If the tooth still has a live nerve and the sensitivity grows instead of settling, tell us.
Zirconia and PFM crowns are the usual choices for molars, because they handle heavy chewing force. Zirconia has no metal and no grey edge at the gum. Metal crowns are also strong and suit back teeth that do not show when you smile.
Most crowns take two visits about a week apart, because the final crown is made in a lab from a scan of your tooth. You wear a temporary crown in between. Your dentist will tell you at the first visit if a quicker option suits your case.
Keep it, avoid chewing on that side, and call us. A temporary crown can usually be cemented back the same day. Do not leave the shaped tooth uncovered for long, because it can become sensitive and the teeth beside it can shift.
Yes. The crown itself cannot decay, but the natural tooth at the edge where the crown meets the gum can. Brushing along the gum line and cleaning between the teeth every day protects that edge.
Ceramic crowns are matched to the shade of your neighbouring teeth. If you plan to whiten your teeth, do it before the crown is made, because a crown does not change colour with whitening.
Not always. A root canal is needed only if the nerve inside the tooth is inflamed, infected or exposed. Many teeth with large fillings or cracks are crowned with the nerve still healthy. An X-ray and a few simple tests decide this.
