Whitening Cosmetic dentistry, Palarivattom
Tea, coffee, turmeric and the years slowly darken natural teeth, and no toothpaste reverses it. Professional teeth whitening lightens the colour of the enamel itself, safely and in a measured way, so you can see the change shade by shade.
At 32 Sparkles Dental Clinic in Palarivattom, Kochi, whitening is planned by our founder and cosmetic dentist, Dr Nikita Menon, who has 19+ years of clinical experience and training in esthetic dentistry.
Sudden sharp sensitivity after whitening at home? Stop using the product and call us. Sensitivity that does not settle is checked, and pain is treated as an emergency.

01 Candidacy
Teeth whitening suits adults with healthy teeth and gums whose natural teeth have darkened with age, food and drink. It does not suit teeth with untreated decay, exposed roots, or front teeth that are mostly crowns or fillings, because those materials do not lighten. People with yellow teeth are usually the most pleased with the result.

Professional teeth whitening uses a peroxide gel that breaks down stain molecules inside the enamel, so the tooth itself looks lighter. It is different from a scale and polish, which removes surface stain and tartar only. Whitening toothpastes mainly polish the surface and cannot change the natural shade.
The NHS advises that whitening should be done by a dentist or under a dentist's supervision, because the gel can irritate the gums if it is too strong or does not fit well. At our clinic the shade is recorded before and after, so you can see the change measured, not guessed.
Have a scale and polish first; removing surface stain and tartar shows the true starting shade and makes the whitening gel work evenly.
03 Options
32 Sparkles Dental Clinic in Palarivattom offers three ways to whiten. The choice depends on how quickly you want results and how sensitive your teeth are.
A stronger gel applied in the chair, with the gums protected.
Custom trays and a milder gel worn at home.
One in-clinic session followed by trays at home.
For teeth that will not whiten, such as old crowns or very grey teeth, veneers or bonding may be better.
04 Background
Teeth darken for two reasons. Stains from tea, coffee, turmeric, betel and tobacco build up on and in the enamel. With age, the enamel also thins, letting more of the yellower dentine underneath show through.
In Kochi, strong tea and coffee several times a day are the most common reasons people ask about whitening. Some discolouration comes from inside the tooth instead: a tooth that has died after a knock turns grey, and some childhood medicines or high fluoride exposure cause bands or spots that bleaching does not fully remove.
05 Procedure
Teeth whitening at 32 Sparkles Dental Clinic in Palarivattom starts with a check that the teeth and gums are healthy, then a recorded starting shade.
Decay and gum problems are treated first, and a scale and polish removes surface stain; deeper tartar may need scaling and root planing.
The starting shade is recorded with a shade guide and photographs in consistent light.
For in-clinic whitening, a protective barrier is placed over the gums and lips.
The whitening gel is applied in timed rounds, or custom trays are made for home use.
The new shade is recorded and compared, and any sensitivity is managed.
Wait about two weeks after whitening before matching new fillings or veneers; the shade settles in that time.
06 Cost
In Kochi, professional teeth whitening generally costs ₹3,000 to ₹18,000, with in-clinic whitening at the upper end and take-home trays lower. These are indicative market ranges collected from Kochi clinic listings and a national price guide, not a quotation from 32 Sparkles Dental Clinic.
| Option | Typical range |
|---|---|
| Professional whitening, Kochi listings | ₹3,000 to ₹18,000 |
| In-clinic whitening, national guide | ₹4,000 to ₹15,000 |
| Scale and polish beforehand | ₹500 to ₹1,500 |
| Refresher gel later | Quoted at the visit |
In-clinic sessions, combined in-clinic and home whitening, and treating sensitivity or decay first.
Take-home trays alone, healthy teeth with no treatment needed first, and keeping trays for future touch-ups.
Your final cost depends on several factors, including the method and the starting shade. An in-person evaluation is required before we can give you an estimate.
Whitening is usually paid at the visit. Ask at the front desk about combined cleaning and whitening.
Keep your take-home trays; a short touch-up every year or so costs far less than starting again.
You get a written estimate and a realistic shade target before treatment.

Keep teeth white after whitening by avoiding strongly coloured food and drink for the first two days, brushing twice daily, and having regular cleanings. Results usually last from several months to a few years, depending on diet and habits.
Avoid tea, coffee, red sauces and turmeric-heavy curries. Mild sensitivity is common and settles.
Use a sensitivity toothpaste if needed. Rinse with water after tea or coffee.
A scale and polish removes new surface stain.
A short touch-up with your trays restores the shade when it starts to fade.
09 Your visit
A first cosmetic visit at 32 Sparkles Dental Clinic takes about 30 minutes. We check the teeth and gums, record your current shade, and explain which whitening method suits you and what result to expect.
Tell us about sensitivity, recent dental work and any planned crowns or veneers, since whitening should come first.
10 Honest limits
Teeth whitening is the wrong choice when teeth or gums are not healthy, when most of the visible teeth are crowns or fillings, or when the discolouration is grey or banded and will not respond well to bleaching.
We advise against whitening, or suggest another option, when:
For deep or uneven stains, smile designing with bonding or veneers may give a more even result.
Ask whether any of your front fillings will need replacing after whitening; old fillings stay the same colour and can show.

15 FAQ
Most people see a change of several shades. The final result depends on your natural tooth colour and the cause of the staining.
No. Whitening only lightens natural enamel. Crowns, fillings and veneers stay the same colour.
A light or laser is sometimes used with in-clinic gel. The whitening comes from the gel; the light does not make results last longer.
Temporary sensitivity is common for a day or two. A sensitivity toothpaste and spacing out sessions help.
From several months to a few years, depending on tea, coffee and smoking habits. Touch-ups keep the shade.
Over-the-counter products use weaker gels and fit poorly, so results are limited. Products with high peroxide should be used only under a dentist.
Yes. Plan at least two to four weeks ahead, so the shade settles and any sensitivity passes.
