01 Overview
Gum contouring, also called gum reshaping or a cosmetic gingivectomy, removes or reshapes a small amount of gum tissue so the gum line sits at the right height on each tooth. It can lengthen teeth that look short, even out a gum line that is higher on one side, and reduce how much gum shows when you smile.
It differs from gum disease treatment, which removes infection, and from gum grafting, which adds tissue where gums have receded. Contouring is planned for appearance on healthy gums, often as part of smile designing.
Ask whether the extra gum is soft tissue only or bone as well; the answer decides whether simple contouring is enough.
02 Background
A gummy or uneven smile has several possible causes. Gum tissue may not have moved back fully as adult teeth erupted, leaving teeth looking short. Some medicines and braces can make gums overgrow. In other people, the upper lip lifts higher than usual, or the upper jaw is longer, so more gum shows.
Only some of these causes are treated by gum contouring. When the problem is lip movement or jaw length, contouring alone gives a limited result, which is why the cause is assessed before treatment.
03 Candidacy
Gum contouring suits adults with healthy gums whose teeth look short because of excess gum, or whose gum line is uneven across the front teeth. It is often combined with veneers or bonding. It does not suit gums that are inflamed or bleeding, which need treatment first.

After gum contouring, the gums are tender for a few days. Eat soft, cool food, brush the area very gently, and avoid smoking while the gums heal over one to two weeks.
Mild soreness and slight bleeding are normal. Avoid hot, spicy food and alcohol.
Brush gently with a soft brush. Use any rinse prescribed.
The gum line settles into its final position.
Good brushing and regular cleaning keep the new line stable.

10 Honest limits
Gum contouring is the wrong choice when the gums are inflamed, when gums have receded rather than overgrown, or when the gummy smile comes mainly from lip movement or jaw length. Removing gum in those cases can expose roots or give a disappointing result.
